In the early morning of July 27th golfers gathered at Sunflowers Hills Golf Course. Their goals for the day were simple. First and foremost, the group wanted to honor the legacy of Bill Mounkes all while raising money for Children’s Mercy Hospital. But that is only the beginning of this heartwarming event.
Bill Mounkes Tourna meant sign
Bill Mounkes was an outstanding athlete, student, father, son, and friend throughout his 31 years. While in high school he was a member of the National Honor society and was a proud teammate of the team to take Shawnee Mission Northwest to the state championship in 1981. After high school he played football for Pittsburg State University on a scholarship. Unfortunately, at the age of 31 Mounkes lost his life to suicide but his family knew that had to carry on his legacy. They decided to combine his love for academics, football, and golf to create the perfect memorial to him.

In 1994 Mounkes family started his annual golf tournament as a way to honor the man they loved. The tournament initially started as a scholarship fund, for a Shawnee Mission Northwest football player who maintained high academic standards and was accepted to Pittsburg State University. In 2008 the foundation decided to focus their efforts on Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Since that decision they have raised over $146,000 for Children’s Mercy. This money has funded many of the hospitals needs such as touch screen monitors for the burn unit to EKG/ECG machine for the specialty clinics. These life changing contributions have helped the children of the hospital recover and brought smiles to many faces.
This year they focused the 23,050 dollars they raised on getting the hospital a sinusoidal bronchotron. This machine is a pneumatic transport ventilator that can assist patients from neonatal to bariatric that have severe lung conditions. It can be used both invasively and noninvasively and is ideal for unstable patients on other modes of ventilation. This equipment will be installed in ambulances.
